This course will look at early maps as poetic templates that can be interpreted and transformed into personal inner landscapes. Visions of the world are brought to life by symbols of land, city, rivers and ocean. Other maps such as cosmos maps, sea charts and dream maps will also be looked at and could offer alternative ways of using mapping as a way of drawing. Students can work with various mixed media materials including ink, gouache and watercolour.
Working from high-definition images of medieval wall maps, and in response to maps in poetry and myth, this will be an in-depth study and opportunity to enjoy different ways of working and possibly to establish ‘artist mapping’ as part of your own practice. All levels welcome.
